Upper Svaneti - Medieval Mural Painting
Upper Svaneti, a region of amazing beauty in the western Georgian highlands. Medieval mural painting is one of the important branches of art preserved in Svaneti. Mural decorations of diverse chronology and differing artistic merits reflect extremely rich legacy left by the painters working in Svaneti. Development of this school, spread over a vast chronology starting from the 9th-10th cc. up to the 17th c. included, comprises varied paintings embellishing interiors, facades and chancel-barriers of the churches.
